Gov. Makinde orders Ibadan roadside traders to relocate
Oyo State Governor, Seyi Makinde, has ordered roadside traders operating around the Agodi-Gate area of Ibadan to vacate the roads and relocate to newly constructed shops and stalls provided by the Ibadan North East Local Government.
The directive was issued on Friday during the commissioning of the new market facility, where the governor reiterated his administration’s stance against street trading.
Makinde stated that the government would no longer tolerate roadside trading, noting that adequate arrangements had been made to accommodate affected traders.
He disclosed that those operating along the Agodi-Gate axis had been properly documented and would be allocated shops within the new facility at no cost.
The governor urged traders to utilise the opportunity to move into a more organised and safer environment, while supporting government efforts to enhance orderliness in the area.
He also warned against any form of extortion, advising traders to report individuals who demand payment before or after relocation.
Makinde assured that the shops were provided free of charge and that no trader should be compelled to pay for allocation.
Reaffirming his administration’s resolve to curb street trading across the state, the governor highlighted the dangers associated with the practice, including risks to motorists, pedestrians and the traders themselves.
He explained that the government’s approach prioritises providing alternative trading spaces before enforcing restrictions on roadside activities.
Makinde acknowledged the economic realities faced by petty traders, noting that many depend on daily earnings to support their families.
He said the newly constructed market was designed to ease their burden while offering a more conducive business environment.
“And as for the traders who sell their wares on the roadside, your names have been properly documented and the shops will be given to you free of charge.
“Report anyone who tries to collect money from you. Move away from the road and enter the park. We have decided that we will always make provisions before prohibiting roadside trading.
“What people fail to realise is that these traders use part of their little profit to send their children to school. So, we have done this project to ease their burden,” the governor said.
