Generator Fire Damages Ilorin Home, Firefighters Prevent Major Disaster
A fire outbreak on Sunday morning partially destroyed a residential building in Ilorin, the Kwara State capital, after a generator reportedly caught fire and spread flames to parts of the property.
The incident occurred at about 7:10 a.m. at No. 5 Obafemi Akere Street, off Basin Road, Ilorin, prompting an emergency response from the Kwara State Fire Service.
According to a statement issued by the spokesperson of the Fire Service, Hassan Adekunle, the affected property was a five-bedroom bungalow. The fire damaged a store and a room located at the rear section of the building before firefighters brought the situation under control.
Adekunle said personnel of the Fire Service arrived promptly at the scene and successfully prevented the blaze from spreading to other parts of the residence.
“Through their prompt and professional intervention, the magnitude of the fire was significantly reduced, preventing it from engulfing the entire building and causing more extensive damage,” he stated.
Preliminary findings by the Fire Service indicated that the fire originated from a generator set that was running unattended when it suddenly caught fire.
According to the statement, the flames spread from the generator to a nearby store and one of the rooms within the compound, resulting in property damage.
No casualties were reported in the incident.
Following the outbreak, the Director of the Kwara State Fire Service, Alabi Muhammed, urged residents to adopt safer practices when using generators, especially during periods of power outages.
He advised members of the public to install generators in well-ventilated locations away from residential buildings and combustible materials, while also ensuring routine maintenance and avoiding leaving the machines unattended while in operation.
The Fire Service reiterated its commitment to protecting lives and property, calling on residents to remain vigilant and observe basic fire safety measures to prevent similar incidents.
