Fraudsters Pose As NNPC, CBN Staff, Demand Money For Jobs
The Adamawa State Police Command has warned members of the public against fraudsters allegedly impersonating engineers and staff of the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL), Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) and other government agencies to defraud unsuspecting victims.
The warning was contained in a public advisory issued on Friday by the Command’s spokesperson, SP Suleiman Yahaya Nguroje, on behalf of the Commissioner of Police, Adamawa State.
According to the police, the fraudsters have intensified their activities by making unsolicited calls to members of the public while falsely claiming to be officials of reputable government institutions.
The suspects allegedly lure their victims with fake offers of employment slots, contracts, empowerment funds and other government-related opportunities.
The police said the fraudsters subsequently demand money from their victims under the guise of processing fees, payment for forms or activation of accounts.
“The criminals call innocent citizens claiming to have job slots, contracts, or empowerment funds and demand money for processing, forms, or account activation,” the statement said.
The Command stressed that the NNPCL, CBN and other government agencies do not conduct recruitment exercises, award contracts or disburse funds through unsolicited private phone calls or WhatsApp messages.
It urged members of the public to disregard such calls and avoid sending money to individuals making such claims.
The police also warned citizens against disclosing sensitive banking and identification details, including Bank Verification Numbers (BVN), National Identification Numbers (NIN), account numbers and One-Time Passwords (OTP), to strangers.
The Command advised members of the public to independently verify claims of job opportunities, contracts or government funds through the official communication channels of the organisations allegedly involved.
It further urged anyone who receives suspicious calls or messages to report them to the nearest police station or the Adamawa State Police Command Control Room.
The Command called on residents to remain vigilant and avoid falling victim to fraudulent schemes.
