Four Passengers Hospitalised After Delta Airlines Flight Diverts To Portugal As Smoke Fills Cabin

Four passengers were taken to hospital after a Delta Airlines flight carrying hundreds of people was forced to make an emergency landing in Portugal after smoke filled the cabin during the journey to the United States.
The Sun reported that 14 passengers were treated for smoke inhalation after alarms went off while the Airbus A330 was flying from Barcelona, Spain, to Boston, US, on Saturday afternoon. Twelve people were given oxygen while the aircraft was still in the air as the crew dealt with the incident.
The aircraft was approaching the Atlantic Ocean when it abruptly changed direction and headed towards Porto. The crew declared an emergency using squawk code 7700 before diverting the flight to Francisco Sá Carneiro Airport.
Portuguese emergency services were alerted at about 5.30pm ahead of the aircraft’s arrival. Firefighters, police officers and ambulance crews were sent to the airport to respond to the emergency, while air traffic in the area was briefly suspended to allow the aircraft to land safely.
Four passengers were subsequently taken to hospital for medical treatment. Two men were admitted to São João Hospital’s accident and emergency department with smoke inhalation, while a spokesman said they had mild respiratory symptoms and were in stable condition.
The other passengers were evacuated from the aircraft after it landed. The 282 passengers who were not injured were transferred to an alternative flight scheduled to continue their journey to Boston.
The aircraft had departed Barcelona-El Prat Airport at about 3.40pm local time and reached Porto roughly three hours later.
Airport operations were only briefly disrupted following the emergency landing. The affected passengers were subsequently provided with an alternative flight to continue their journey.
