Former Top senator Dies At 76

Former Senator Omololu Samuel Meroyi, who represented Ondo South Senatorial District in the Nigerian Senate between 1999 and 2003, has died at 76.

His younger brother, Meroyi Yomi Charles, confirmed his death to SaharaReporters on Wednesday afternoon, saying the former lawmaker died earlier that morning.

Charles, however, did not disclose the cause of death.

Meroyi was first elected to the Senate in 1999 on the platform of the Alliance for Democracy (AD), representing Ondo South Senatorial District. He later defected to the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) during his political career.

Born on January 1, 1950, Meroyi obtained a Master of Science degree in Economics from the London School of Economics.

Before serving in the Senate, he was elected to the House of Representatives in 1983.

Following his tenure in the National Assembly, he remained active in Nigerian politics and later served as the South-West National Vice Chairman of the Nigerian Senators’ Forum.

Outside politics, Meroyi was a management consultant and also served as Chairman of Araromi Rubber Estates Limited.
