Former NFL cornerback Alphonso Smith Jr. has reportedly died by suicide at the age of 40 in Florida.
According to reports, Smith died on Wednesday at a housing community in Florida, shortly after publishing a disturbing final message on Facebook in which he apologised to his family, friends and others he said he had hurt.
In the post, Smith said he had struggled with what he described as “demons” and claimed he had sought help but did not receive it.
“Do not cry for me! I tried everything in my power to fight the demons behind the ones that someone put into ME!” he wrote.
“I did not want to be that WAY! I know I have disappointed so many folks. This is a DEMON in me! But not only me! It’s EVERYONE! I have HURT so many! I needed help & did not get it!”
Smith repeatedly apologised in the lengthy message, describing himself as a “coward” and expressing regret over the impact of his actions on those around him.
“To my kids, daddy is SO SORRY!” he wrote.
He also addressed his friends and family, saying: “To my friends, I love you all, but your boy was fucked up!”
Smith further disclosed that he had experienced abuse as a child, alleging that an older woman had sexually abused him.
“To my family, BABY, my MOM, my siblings, things happened to your boy, your brother while I was little that an older lady did onto me,” he wrote.
“As a result guys, I did the same onto others! Please forgive me!”
He ended the post by urging people to pray for their families and those affected by his actions.
“Please pray over your families! PLEASE PRAY FOR ALL I’ve affected!” Smith wrote.
“I am the WORST & I pray my soul rest in heaven for my heart is pure, but my BRAIN & experience is MESSED UP‼️”
The post concluded with another apology: “Once again to ALLLLLL! I am SORRY! THIS IS IT!”
Smith played college football at Wake Forest before being selected by the Denver Broncos in the second round of the 2010 NFL Draft. He later played for the Detroit Lions and other teams during his professional career.
