Former First Lady Passes Away at 76

Ghana is mourning the loss of one of its most influential women leaders, Nana Konadu Agyeman-Rawlings, who has passed away at the age of 76.

Nana Konadu, wife of the late former President Jerry John Rawlings, served as Ghana’s First Lady from 1981 to 2001. She was widely respected for her tireless advocacy for women’s empowerment, gender equality, and social justice.

During her time as First Lady, she founded the 31st December Women’s Movement, a grassroots organization that championed women’s education, economic independence, and political participation across Ghana and beyond.

Her leadership and courage inspired countless women to take up leadership roles in politics and civil society.

Beyond her activism, Nana Konadu was also a strong political figure. She later became the flag bearer of the National Democratic Party (NDP), cementing her status as one of Ghana’s most formidable female politicians.

Tributes have begun pouring in from political leaders, activists, and citizens across Africa, celebrating her as a trailblazer, patriot, and pillar of women’s empowerment.
