Former CIA Officer Arrested Over Alleged Looting Of Agency Vaults, Hiding $40million Gold Bars, Luxury Watches In US Home
Investigators claimed Rush falsely portrayed himself as a former Navy pilot and also claimed to possess advanced university degrees that authorities later discovered never existed.
Aformer officer of the United States Central Intelligence Agency (CIA), David Rush, has been arrested in Virginia after federal investigators allegedly uncovered a massive cache of stolen gold bars, foreign currency, cash and luxury items linked to the intelligence agency.
Rush was taken into custody last week on allegations bordering on theft of public funds after the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) reportedly discovered more than 300 gold bars estimated to be worth about $40 million hidden inside his residence, according to CNN.
An FBI affidavit cited by multiple U.S. media reports showed that Rush allegedly spent years deceiving the US government about his military background and academic qualifications before rising to a senior executive role within the CIA with top-secret clearance.
Investigators claimed Rush falsely portrayed himself as a former Navy pilot and also claimed to possess advanced university degrees that authorities later discovered never existed.
Despite those alleged false claims, Rush reportedly worked for the CIA for about 17 years before the discrepancies were uncovered.
Court filings indicated that investigators later verified with the US Navy that Rush had actually served partly as an information systems technician rather than a pilot as he allegedly claimed in official applications.
The universities where Rush said he obtained bachelor’s and master’s degrees reportedly informed investigators that they had no academic records bearing his name.
Federal prosecutors further accused him of fabricating several high-level professional achievements, including claims that he once supervised a 145-person, 18-aircraft joint Army/Navy weapons testing organisation.
The FBI affidavit also alleged that in 2018 Rush falsely stated that he had served for 11 years as a thesis and dissertation adviser at the Air Force Institute of Technology while seeking promotion into the senior executive service cadre.
Authorities further alleged that after leaving military service in 2015, Rush fraudulently claimed hundreds of hours of military leave benefits while employed by the government, receiving roughly $77,000 in improper compensation.
Investigators said the case escalated late last year after Rush allegedly requested “a significant quantity of foreign currency and tens of millions of dollars in gold bars for work-related expenses.”
Two days before his arrest, FBI agents reportedly raided his Virginia residence where they recovered approximately $2million in cash, dozens of luxury wristwatches, many identified as Rolex brands, and the massive stockpile of gold bars.
The FBI said a substantial portion of the allegedly stolen assets has not yet been recovered.
Rush has not entered a plea and remains in custody awaiting a detention hearing.
The CIA confirmed that Rush no longer works for the agency.
The FBI in a statement said the case began after an internal CIA investigation uncovered possible criminal conduct.
“After a CIA internal investigation identified potential violations of the law, CIA Director John Ratcliffe referred the information to the FBI for a law enforcement investigation,” the bureau said.
“The FBI is working closely with our partners at the CIA and the Department of Justice as we continue to investigate this matter fully.
“We are committed to following the facts, ensuring accountability, and pursuing justice in accordance with the law.”
