Five Dead, Dozens Injured as Floods Devastate Yola

At least five people have been confirmed dead and 55 others injured after severe flooding struck Yola, the Adamawa State capital, in the early hours of Sunday.

The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) confirmed the fatalities, noting that emergency operations are ongoing in the worst-affected communities. “We can confirm five deaths and 55 people injured so far. Rescue operations are still underway,” a NEMA spokesperson stated.

The floods, caused by relentless rainfall overnight, have left hundreds homeless and damaged over 600 houses across the state capital. Many residents were caught unprepared as floodwaters rapidly rose, submerging homes, roads, and farmlands.

Rescue efforts have been intensified, with marine police units and local emergency teams deploying boats to reach stranded victims in hard-hit areas. Authorities fear the casualty figures may increase as more communities become accessible.

Several of the injured are receiving treatment at the Modibbo Adama Teaching Hospital, where medical personnel are on high alert to manage the surge of emergency cases.

Officials have urged residents living in low-lying areas to relocate to safer ground and remain vigilant as more rain is expected in the coming days.
