FG approves nationwide sports infrastructure overhaul
The Federal Government, through the National Sports Commission, has approved a major nationwide sports infrastructure revamp aimed at repositioning Nigerian sports and restoring key facilities to international standards.
The projects include the complete rehabilitation and upgrade of the Moshood Abiola National Stadium, with improvements to tracks, floodlights, media and athlete facilities, as well as the construction of a High Performance Centre and an anti-doping laboratory.
Other planned developments include the construction of training pitches, redevelopment of the 200-room athletes’ hostel into a standard hotel, installation of Video Assistant Referee (VAR) facilities, upgrades to medical centres with modern equipment, and the development of a new sports centre to provide additional office spaces for sports federations.
The initiative also covers the rehabilitation of critical sports infrastructure across the country, direct support for states hosting future National Sports Festivals, development of elite sports facilities nationwide, and the construction of mini sports centres across communities.
In addition, the government plans to establish sports facilities in selected tertiary institutions to promote sports centres of excellence and strengthen grassroots and school sports development.
According to the NSC, the investments represent the first phase of a broader plan aligned with the Renewed Hope Agenda and shared prosperity vision of Bola Ahmed Tinubu.
The commission said the projects are designed to position sports as a key driver of youth empowerment, economic growth, talent development, and national unity.
