FCT Launch Operation To Remove Street Beggars, Criminal Gangs
The Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA) has started a fresh operation to clear Abuja and nearby towns of street traders, beggars, scavengers, suspected criminals, and others considered a threat to public order.
The move follows a directive from the FCT Minister, Nyesom Wike, who ordered the immediate removal of these groups from the city.
A joint team made up of security officers and FCTA departments has already been deployed for this task.
The operation, tagged “Operation Sweep Abuja,” aims to restore order across the FCT by tackling loitering, begging, illegal trading, and scavenging.
Those arrested during the exercise will be documented and sent back to their home states.
The minister said Abuja must reflect the status of a national capital and not be overrun by people involved in street activities that pose safety risks.
Authorities said many of those on the streets are connected to criminal gangs, including “one-chance” operators who target unsuspecting passengers.
The FCTA called on residents to support the operation by reporting any strange movement to the numbers provided by the task force.
