The Adamawa State Police Command has arrested a 36-year-old man accused of impersonating a police inspector and attempting to steal a motorcycle in Girei Local Government Area of the state.
The suspect, identified as Habila Ibrahim, allegedly presented himself as Inspector Yakubu Yusuf, claiming to be attached to the Border Patrol Unit at the Sahuda–Cameroon border, in an apparent attempt to evade arrest.
Police said a fake police warrant card, a complete police uniform and a master key suspected to have been used for motorcycle theft were recovered from him.
According to a statement issued on Tuesday by the command’s spokesperson, Suleiman Yahaya Nguroje, the suspect was arrested on October 10, 2026, after officers on crime-prevention patrol along the Girei–Yola Road responded to a distress call.
The officers reportedly intercepted Ibrahim while he was allegedly attempting to steal a Boxer motorcycle belonging to Alhaji Musa, a resident of Wuro Dole in Girei.
During initial questioning, the suspect allegedly identified himself as Inspector Yakubu Yusuf and claimed to be serving at the border patrol unit near the Cameroon border.
However, further investigation reportedly established his identity as Habila Ibrahim, said to be from Blue House, Kasuwan Gada, Vimtim, in Mubi North Local Government Area.
The police said he was suspected of involvement in motorcycle theft and impersonating security personnel to facilitate theft and defraud members of the public in Girei, Mubi North and Mubi South local government areas.
The recovered items included a fake police warrant card bearing the name Inspector Yakubu Yusuf, a complete police uniform and a master key suspected to have been used in motorcycle theft.
The Commissioner of Police in Adamawa State, Kabir Umar Hassan, commended the officers for their vigilance and swift response, warning criminal suspects against impersonating police officers or other security personnel.
He urged residents to report individuals wearing police uniforms and engaging in suspicious activities to the nearest police station or through the command’s emergency channels.
The police said Ibrahim remained in custody and would be charged to court after investigations were concluded.
