‘Fake content’ — CBN disowns viral document approving $46bn grant

The Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) has disowned a viral document showing the approval of a $46 billion grant for a development centre.

The purported letter, dated August 13, 2026, claimed that Yemi Cardoso, the CBN governor, had approved the release of $46 billion to Atufeg Empowerment and Development Center and one Amb. Engr. Atunde Femi Gabriel.

“The CBN confirms full endorsement and authorises the immediate transfer of these funds to the beneficiary’s designated account,” the letter reads.

According to the document, the funds were to be transferred for the execution of “approved national empowerment and developmental projects”.

However, in a post on X on Thursday, the apex bank described the document as fake and urged the public to disregard it.

“This content is fake. Let the public be guided,” the CBN said.

The CBN also shared an image of the purported letter marked “Fake Content”.

The apex bank had previously warned members of the public against fraudulent schemes and documents falsely attributed to the institution.

The CBN advised Nigerians to rely on its official communication channels for information on its policies and activities.

In recent months, companies have had to disown social media posts issued by unauthorised persons impersonating their brands and circulating purported corporate messages.

On August 19, May & Baker Nigeria Plc warned members of the public against a fraudulent investment scheme being circulated online in the name of the pharmaceutical company.

On August 31, Opay dismissed a notice circulating online claiming that it will suspend transactions and account-related services from September 1, 2026, is false.

The fintech also threatened legal action against an X user named Hafserh over the publication.
