Ex-Governorship Candidate Dumps ADC Nine Months After Exiting APC, Joins NDC
Binani’s move comes barely nine months after she exited the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) for the African Democratic Congress (ADC).
Former Adamawa State governorship candidate, Aishatu Binani, has formally defected to the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), marking another shift in her political alignment ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Binani’s move comes barely nine months after she exited the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) for the African Democratic Congress (ADC).
Speaking on Friday shortly after receiving her NDC membership card, the former senator said her decision was driven by the party’s “commitment to structured, policy-driven governance” and pressure from her political base.
“I believe many Nigerians are asking why I decided to join the NDC. The answer is quite simple. After carefully studying the party’s constitution, I saw a strong commitment to structured, policy-driven governance,” she said.
Addressing concerns over her frequent party switches, Binani insisted she would not disparage her former platforms, describing politics as dynamic and largely influenced by prevailing realities.
“Some may point out that just nine months ago, I was in another party. Let me say clearly that I will never condemn where I came from. Politics is dynamic and often local in nature,” she added.
She, however, emphasised that her decision was largely influenced by her supporters, who she said had already begun integrating into the NDC before her formal defection.
According to her, Adamawa currently boasts one of the highest numbers of registered NDC members, a development she credited to her grassroots political structure.
“No individual can succeed in politics alone. It is the supporters who drive the process, build the foundation, and sustain the journey,” she said, while also calling for fairness, transparency and strengthened internal democracy within the party.
Reacting, the National Leader of the NDC and former Bayelsa State governor, Seriake Dickson, described the party as an inclusive platform open to new entrants.
“This party is open, inclusive, and ready to harness your energy, ideas, and strength. The flag of leadership of the NDC in Adamawa has now been handed over to you,” Dickson said.
He also used the opportunity to invite politicians dissatisfied with their current parties to join the NDC, insisting that no Nigerian is bound to remain in a political platform against their will.
“Every Nigerian has the constitutional right to join any political party at any time—and to leave at any time. If the vehicle you boarded is no longer taking you to your destination, you have every right to step down,” he said.
Binani was the APC governorship candidate in the 2023 Adamawa election, where she contested against incumbent governor Ahmadu Fintiri of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).
The election drew national attention after the Resident Electoral Commissioner, Hudu-Yunusa Ari, controversially declared her winner during collation — a decision later nullified by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), which subsequently suspended the official.
