The Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) has said that a Federal High Court sitting in Kaduna granted conditional bail to former Kaduna State Governor, Nasir Ahmad El-Rufai, ordering him to report to the Commission monthly and seek court approval before any change of residence.
In a press statement issued on Tuesday, the ICPC disclosed that the court imposed stringent bail conditions on El-Rufai as part of ongoing legal proceedings arising from allegations of corruption, fraud, and abuse of office during his tenure between 2015 and 2023.
According to the Commission, the Federal High Court admitted El-Rufai to bail in the sum of ₦200 million with two sureties in like sum. One of the sureties, the court ruled, “must be a resident in Kaduna State with a property worth ₦200 million and a verified Certificate of Occupancy, while the second surety must be a well-respected elder, certified by an elders’ council.”
The ICPC further stated that the court directed the former governor to deposit his passport with the court registrar and sign an undertaking not to interfere with prosecution witnesses.
“Other conditions include reporting to the Commission’s headquarters every first Monday of the month and also restricted to live in a specific residence of his,” the statement read.
“The judge held that if Mallam El-Rufai desires to change his residence, a 72-hour notice should be given to the court prior to any change of residence,” the Commission added.
The anti-graft agency also noted that the court ordered El-Rufai to remain in its custody pending the fulfilment of the bail conditions.
Providing broader context, the ICPC said the charges stem from a “protracted investigation” into El-Rufai’s administration, leading to a 10-count charge filed before the Federal High Court against him and a co-defendant, Joel Adoga.
The Commission alleged that El-Rufai unlawfully received ₦289,826,998.12 as severance allowance, far above his legal entitlement of ₦20,013,245, between 2020 and 2023.
He was also accused of receiving $797,900 into his domiciliary account from individuals, “with knowledge that the funds were proceeds of unlawful activities,” as well as conspiring to disguise the origin of $10,000 in 2019.
Both defendants have pleaded not guilty to the charges.
Meanwhile, the ICPC stated that a separate proceeding at the Kaduna State High Court, where El-Rufai faces an amended nine-count charge bordering on fraud and abuse of office, was adjourned.
The presiding judge, Justice Darius Khobo, said the ruling on El-Rufai’s bail application was not ready and adjourned the matter to April 21, 2026.
“The court further ordered that the defendant remains in the custody of the Commission pending the determination of the bail application,” the ICPC said.
The Commission reiterated its commitment to due process, stating that the prosecution is being conducted “diligently and in accordance with established legal procedures,” while assuring the public that it would continue to provide updates as the cases progress.
SaharaReporters earlier reported that El-Rufai had been granted bail by the Federal High Court sitting in Kaduna, while a separate bail application before the Kaduna State High Court had been adjourned to April 21, 2026.
It clarified that two separate court sittings held on Tuesday in Kaduna, one at the Federal High Court and another at the Kaduna State High Court, both involving bail proceedings relating to El-Rufai.
At the Federal High Court, the former governor was granted bail, while the State High Court adjourned its own hearing on the bail application to April 21, 2026.
