Enugu Medical University Sacks Lecturer Found Guilty Of Sexually Harassing Female Student

Ogbuka was of the Chemistry Unit, Department of Physical Sciences, Faculty of Natural and Applied Sciences. He was found guilty of sexually harassing the female student, whose identity was not disclosed.

The State University of Medical and Applied Sciences (SUMAS), Igbo-Eno, Enugu State, has sacked a lecturer, Mr Sunday Chinweike Ogbuka, over sexual harassment of a female student.

The university announced the termination of Ogbuka’s academic appointment in a statement signed by its Registrar, Dr A.U. Onah, which SaharaReporters obtained on Thursday. It said the decision was taken at Management’s meeting on Tuesday, September 8, 2026.

Ogbuka was of the Chemistry Unit, Department of Physical Sciences, Faculty of Natural and Applied Sciences. He was found guilty of sexually harassing the female student, whose identity was not disclosed.

The statement said the action reaffirmed SUMAS’s zero-tolerance policy towards sexual harassment and other forms of misconduct.

It added that the university remained committed to protecting the rights, dignity and well-being of students and to maintaining an academic environment where teaching, learning and research can take place without fear, intimidation, exploitation or harassment.

“SUMAS considers sexual harassment a serious violation of the standards of conduct expected of members of the university community,” the statement said.

It noted that such misconduct undermines the trust essential to staff-student relationships and is incompatible with the university’s values of integrity, professionalism, discipline and respect for human dignity.

The university said no member of staff is above its rules and regulations. It stressed that positions of academic authority carry a responsibility to protect, guide and support students.

It urged staff and students to familiarise themselves with relevant policies and regulations, maintain appropriate professional boundaries and report incidents of sexual harassment or other misconduct through appropriate institutional channels.

Management also encouraged complaints of harassment to be treated with the seriousness they deserve while respecting confidentiality, due process and the dignity of all parties involved.

It assured students, parents, guardians and other stakeholders that it would continue to uphold institutional discipline, enforce applicable regulations and take appropriate action against established cases of misconduct.

“At SUMAS, academic excellence must go hand in hand with integrity, accountability and respect for human dignity. Sexual harassment has no place in the University, and the institution will continue to uphold the standards necessary to protect its students and preserve the integrity of its academic community,” the statement added.
