Eid-el-Kabir: Military Raises Alarm Over Possible Boko Haram, ISWAP Attacks
The Headquarters Joint Task Force (North East), Operation HADIN KAI (OPHK), has raised the alarm over possible attacks during the Eid-el-Kabir celebrations, warning that remnant Boko Haram Terrorist (BHT) and Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP) elements may try to “exploit the festive period to carry out attacks against civilian targets using suicide bombers and IEDs,” especially in crowded areas.
Despite the threat, the Theatre Command assured residents of comprehensive security arrangements ahead of the Wednesday, May 28, 2026, celebrations. In a statement Sunday by Media Information Officer Lt. Col. Sani Uba, OPHK said the threats “have been thoroughly anticipated.” Troops have been forward-deployed to critical and vulnerable locations, surveillance and ISR assets fully activated, and patrols intensified across all sectors.
The Command is working closely with police, the CJTF, and community vigilance groups to forestall any breach. “Troops are on standby, fully prepared, and firmly in control,” Uba said, adding that OPHK remains “resolute in its determination to deny terrorists any freedom of action.”
OPHK issued key guidance for residents:
Hold Eid prayers close to home and avoid large open gatherings where possible.
Stay vigilant in markets, motor parks, banks, and prayer grounds.
Report suspicious persons or objects to the nearest checkpoint immediately.
Avoid unnecessary night movement and spreading unverified information.
The Command urged traditional rulers, religious leaders, and community stakeholders to encourage timely reporting of credible security information to ensure a “peaceful and rewarding Eid El Kabir celebration.”
