EFCC Arrests Former Power Minister Saleh Mamman in Kaduna

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has arrested former Minister of Power, Saleh Mamman, following days of intense search after his recent conviction over alleged corruption and money laundering charges.

According to reports, Mamman was arrested in Rigasa, Kaduna State, after reportedly evading authorities since his conviction earlier this month. The arrest marks a major development in one of Nigeria’s high-profile anti-corruption cases involving a former cabinet member.

The former minister had earlier been sentenced to a cumulative 75 years imprisonment by a Federal High Court in Abuja after being found guilty on multiple counts bordering on money laundering and diversion of public funds linked to major power projects. The case involved approximately ₦33.8 billion allegedly tied to the Mambilla and Zungeru Hydroelectric Power projects. 

Reports indicate that Mamman had gone into hiding after the judgment was delivered in absentia, prompting security agencies to intensify efforts to locate him. EFCC Chairman, Ola Olukoyede, disclosed that the former minister was eventually apprehended in Kaduna during a late-night operation. Authorities also reportedly arrested individuals suspected of aiding his concealment. 

Saleh Mamman served as Minister of Power under the administration of former President Muhammadu Buhari between 2019 and 2021 before leaving office.

The arrest is being viewed by observers as a significant moment in Nigeria’s anti-corruption campaign, particularly given the rarity of successful prosecution and enforcement involving top public officials.
