DSS Re-Arrests Federal Workers Forum Leader Days After Release
The Department of State Services (DSS) has re-arrested Andrew Emelieze, the National Coordinator of the Federal Workers Forum, just days after his release.
He was taken into custody in Ibadan, Oyo State, on Friday morning and quietly taken to court, where the DSS reportedly tried to obtain a fresh warrant to keep him in detention.
Emelieze had been released earlier in the week after his initial arrest sparked public criticism.
His arrest is believed to be connected to a planned protest by federal workers across the country, originally set for July 1.
The protest was meant to push for payment of minimum wage and other outstanding allowances.
Despite claims that the government had begun making arrangements for the next round of wage awards, which had been delayed since May, the Federal Workers Forum maintained its stance.
The group said that the government’s promises were not enough and insisted the protest would go on as planned.
In an online meeting held on June 29, the Forum confirmed that the expected payment would likely come after June salaries.
However, it stressed that unresolved welfare concerns and the long wait for action had left workers with no choice but to proceed with the protest.
The Forum has continued to call on the government to urgently address the poor treatment of federal workers, warning that silence or delay will only worsen the frustration among public servants.
