Drivers Without Number Plates or Using Covered Plates Will Be Arrested and Prosecuted, No Matter Who They Are — IGP Tunji Disu Warns

Speaking on efforts to end impunity, the police chief said the force is committed to holding both officers and members of the public accountable for breaking the law.

According to him, the police have already sanctioned several erring officers following complaints from Nigerians, with many dismissed or punished for misconduct.

“When we say end to impunity, it does not concern only our officers; it concerns every member of the public as well,” he said.

The IGP stressed that no one has the right to drive a vehicle without properly affixed number plates or to conceal them, describing the growing trend as a d@ngerous practice often linked to criminal activities.

“You cannot drive your vehicle in this country without affixing number plates to it. We are going to arrest you and we will charge you to court accordingly,” he said.

He added, “You are not going to cover your number plate. You do not have the right to cover your number plate. They have turned that into a status symbol.”

The police boss further alleged that many motorists who conceal their number plates also fail to renew their vehicle registrations and driver’s licences, depriving the Federal Government of revenue.

He revealed that he has directed police officers across the country to immediately arrest anyone found driving without number plates or using covered registration plates.

“At the end of the day, by the time you arrest them, no matter their status, you will notice they have not been updating their registration numbers. For years, they have not then gotten new licenses. They have been shortchanging the Federal Government of Nigeria. So, I have directed my officers to ensure they arrest anybody driving their vehicles without numbering them or covering their number plates,” Disu said.
