Cristiano Ronaldo Breaks Silence On Jorge Jesus Fallout, Says Portugal Coach ‘Broke His Word’ To Him

Ronaldo said he decided to speak out as promised and recount the events “in the first person and directly,” including his conversations with the Portuguese Football Federation (FPF) president and Jesus.

Portuguese football legend Cristiano Ronaldo has broken his silence on his reported fallout with Portugal head coach Jorge Jesus, giving his account of events surrounding the national team’s most recent training camp.

Ronaldo said he decided to speak out as promised and recount the events “in the first person and directly,” including his conversations with the Portuguese Football Federation (FPF) president and Jesus.

The Al Nassr forward said that after the 2026 FIFA World Cup, he had prepared a letter to the Portuguese people outlining what he wanted to tell them when he eventually ended his international career.

He said that while returning from the United States after the World Cup, the FPF president asked him to reconsider his decision to leave the national team because the federation wanted him to continue.

According to Ronaldo, the federation president subsequently asked for his opinion on the appointment of the then-current head coach, Jorge Jesus, who was being considered alongside other unnamed candidates.

“I told the President of the Federation that, in my opinion, it would be the right choice,” Ronaldo said.

“That is why, on the day the current head coach was presented, I was genuinely happy with the choice. It was the right option, as the results are confirming.”

Ronaldo said Jesus contacted him a few days later and requested a meeting, which he accepted.

The pair eventually met at the Cidade do Futebol, where Ronaldo’s club, Al Nassr, was holding its pre-season training camp.

“That day the coach told me he was counting on me and that my presence was fundamental to his project,” Ronaldo said.

“He presented me, right there, with a plan for my participation. He told me I would play the first match and the last one, and that for reasons of physical management he would always make three to four changes per match.”

According to Ronaldo, Jesus then proposed that he remain in Portugal instead of travelling with the national team for matches in Norway and Denmark.

“At that point he raised the possibility of me not travelling with the national team to Norway and Denmark. He proposed that I play the first match and stay in Portugal, then rejoin before the match at the Dragão,” he said.

Ronaldo said he immediately rejected the proposal, arguing that remaining in Portugal while his teammates travelled would send the wrong message.

“I refused this proposal immediately. It seemed obvious to me that I could not accept it. It was not because I would not play the matches abroad that I would stop captaining our team. That privilege of staying in Portugal would not be a good example.”

He said Jesus ultimately agreed with his position.

Ronaldo added that the conversation was witnessed by Simão Coutinho, Al Nassr’s sporting director, whom he described as the person to whom Jesus reported throughout the previous season and one of those responsible for his signing by the Saudi club in 2025.

The Portugal captain said Jesus subsequently visited his home in Lisbon on the eve of the training camp for another discussion.

“On the eve of the start of the camp the coach came to my house in Lisbon, at his request, for another conversation with me. The conversation was calm and all the principles agreed in August were maintained.”

Ronaldo said he played the match at Alvalade and accepted being substituted without complaint, even handing the captain’s armband to Bruno Fernandes himself.

“I put the armband on Bruno Fernandes myself, far from imagining that I might be taking my last steps as a player and captain of the National Team,” he said.

“What mattered to me that day was our victory. Winning is always good; in Portugal and for my country, even better.

However, Ronaldo said the situation changed on the day of Portugal’s match in Norway.

He said an assistant approached him during lunch and told him that Jesus wanted to speak with him.

“At lunchtime on the day of the match in Norway, an assistant to the coach came to the table where the group was having lunch and informed me that the coach wanted to speak to me.”

Ronaldo said he was surprised when Jesus asked whether he was fit to play for 30 minutes.

“To my absolute surprise, the coach asked me if I was fit to play 30 minutes,” he said.

Ronaldo explained that he had been concentrating on his recovery and had expected not to play that match because the original plan was for him to feature in the subsequent game at the Dragão.

“I was fully focused on my physical recovery, integrated with my teammates as always, and thinking that I would not play that day. Without any problem.”

He said the request was outside the physical recovery and training plan previously agreed with him, but he accepted.

“This request was something outside my physical recovery and training plan — because I was only going to play on the 4th at the Dragão — but of course I said yes.”

According to Ronaldo, Jesus told him to prepare because he would play for 30 minutes.

“He replied that I should then be ready because I would play 30 minutes. The rest everyone knows.”

Ronaldo said he warmed up from half-time but was ultimately not brought onto the pitch.

“I warmed up from half-time, watched the minutes go by, and was notcalled.”

He concluded his account with a direct criticism of the Portugal coach.

“The coach had broken his word to me.”

Ronaldo is currently in a tense situation with Portugal’s new coach Jorge Jesus, after abruptly leaving the national team’s training camp ahead of a Nations League match against Denmark. The dispute stems from Jesus deciding not to start Ronaldo, which has raised questions about his future role with the team.

Jorge Jesus was appointed Portugal’s head coach in July 2026, replacing Roberto Martínez after Portugal’s elimination from the World Cup.

Jesus signed a four-year contract running through the 2030 World Cup. He previously coached Ronaldo at Al Nassr in Saudi Arabia, where they won the league together.

Ronaldo, now 41 years old, had announced the 2026 World Cup would be his last, but he did not retire from international football. He was included in Portugal’s Nations League squad in September 2026.

Jesus emphasized that Ronaldo would be treated like any other player: “If he performs well, he plays. If he doesn’t, he doesn’t.”

On October 1, 2026, Ronaldo left Portugal’s training camp in Copenhagen before the Nations League match against Denmark. The departure followed Jesus’s announcement that Ronaldo would not be picked for the game.

Ronaldo had already been benched in the previous match against Norway, which reportedly left him disappointed.

Portuguese media captured Ronaldo leaving the stadium with staff members, and reports suggested he boarded a private jet soon after.
