Bishop Kukah Warns Nigerians Ahead Of 2027 Elections: “Vote To Stay Alive; We Are All Responsible For Our Choices”
He encouraged Nigerians to make use of online platforms to obtain information about candidates and their records before casting their ballots.
The Bishop of the Catholic Diocese of Sokoto, Matthew Kukah, has urged Nigerians to take responsibility for their choices in the 2027 elections, warning that their votes could determine the country’s future.
Kukah spoke on Friday during the 70th anniversary celebration of Saint Finbarr’s College, where he urged voters to research candidates thoroughly before deciding who to support.
He encouraged Nigerians to make use of online platforms to obtain information about candidates and their records before casting their ballots.
Kukah said although voters often blame the Independent National Electoral Commission, government and security agencies for problems surrounding elections, they must also accept responsibility for the choices they make at the polls.
“We can blame INEC, we can blame government. But in the final analysis, nobody is holding a gun to your head and asking you to vote for anyone…
“Vote to stay alive. We are all largely responsible for the choices we make,” he said.
The bishop urged Nigerians not to vote based solely on political promises or party affiliations, but to examine the candidates and make informed decisions.
His comments come amid increased political activity ahead of the 2027 general elections, with the All Progressives Congress inaugurating a campaign council in Ogun State and former presidential candidate Peter Obi visiting Kaduna, where he warned politicians against making unrealistic promises.
Kukah’s remarks highlight the importance of voter responsibility and informed participation as political parties and candidates begin preparations for the 2027 elections.
