Bayern Munich coach Vincent Kompany discharged from hospital after collapse

Bayern Munich head coach Vincent Kompany has been discharged from hospital and is doing well after collapsing at the club’s training ground last week.

The 40-year-old Belgian was rushed to hospital on Friday after falling ill while watching the club’s second team train. Club officials later confirmed the cause as meningeal irritation, an inflammation of the protective membrane surrounding the brain and spinal cord.
Max Eberl, Bayern’s board member for sports, gave the update on Wednesday ahead of the team’s German Cup match against Magdeburg. “Given the circumstances, he’s doing well,” Eberl told German broadcaster ARD. “He was discharged from the hospital today. That is the biggest and best news for all of us.”
Eberl explained the diagnosis clearly. “It’s a meningeal irritation that caused this incident on Friday. He will now rest and take medication, and I am certain that he will very soon be back on the touchline, operating at 100%.”
Kompany had been nursing a virus in the days before the collapse and had already missed some first-team training sessions. He was absent from the pre-match press conference before Bayern’s Champions League draw with Arsenal but still managed to take his place on the touchline for that game.
In his absence, assistant coach Aaron Danks has stepped in. Danks oversaw a 3-1 Bundesliga win at Freiburg on Sunday and then guided the side to a 6-1 victory over Magdeburg in the German Cup on Wednesday night.
Bayern had earlier indicated that Kompany’s return would take “weeks, not days.” No firm date has been set, and the club has stressed that he will only resume duties after receiving full medical clearance. Eberl said the coach is now continuing his recovery at home with rest and medication.
Harry Kane, who won the Ballon d’Or on Monday, revealed that Kompany had called him that morning to wish him luck. The phone call came while the coach was still in hospital, showing he remained connected to the squad despite his condition.
Bayern currently sit top of the Bundesliga table on goal difference, level on points with Borussia Dortmund. The two sides meet at the Allianz Arena on Saturday in a high-stakes clash. Danks is expected to remain in charge for that fixture as Kompany continues his recovery.
The news of the discharge has brought relief across the club. Eberl described the past few days as a difficult period for everyone at Bayern but insisted the focus now is on giving Kompany the time he needs to return fully fit.
Kompany joined Bayern as head coach in 2024 after successful spells as a player at Manchester City and as a manager at Burnley. His first full season in charge has seen the team challenge at the top of the Bundesliga while also competing in Europe. The health scare has been a rare disruption in what has otherwise been a strong campaign so far.
Club staff and players have kept in contact with the coach during his hospital stay. Danks visited him before the discharge, according to reports from the club. The priority remains Kompany’s full recovery before any return to the dugout.
With the diagnosis confirmed and the coach now home, Bayern can turn their full attention back to the pitch while their head coach rests and recovers.
