Artemis II Astronauts Return To Earth After 10 Days On Lunar Mission

The crew splashed down in the Pacific Ocean at 00:07 GMT (20:07 EDT), concluding what officials described as a “textbook touchdown” following a carefully choreographed re-entry and descent sequence.

Astronauts aboard Artemis II have safely returned to Earth, marking the successful end of a groundbreaking 10-day journey that took humans farther into space than ever before and renewed global momentum for deep space exploration.

The crew splashed down in the Pacific Ocean at 00:07 GMT (20:07 EDT), concluding what officials described as a “textbook touchdown” following a carefully choreographed re-entry and descent sequence.

Commander Reid Wiseman confirmed shortly after landing that all four astronauts were “healthy,” while officials from NASA told a press conference that the crew were “happy and in good condition” after the physically demanding mission.

“This is the start of a new era of human space exploration,” NASA said, highlighting the broader significance of Artemis II as a precursor to future crewed lunar landings and eventual missions deeper into the solar system.

The mission reached a defining milestone on April 6 when the Orion spacecraft carried the astronauts to a distance of 406,771 kilometres (252,756 miles) from Earth during a lunar flyby, breaking the record for the furthest humans have ever travelled into space.

The achievement underscores the growing ambition of international space agencies to expand human presence beyond low-Earth orbit.

The return journey, though meticulously planned, involved moments of intense precision and risk.

At 23:33 GMT, the Orion capsule separated from its service module, which had powered and steered the spacecraft throughout the mission before burning up harmlessly in Earth’s atmosphere. Minutes later, at 23:53 GMT, the capsule began its high-speed re-entry, travelling at more than 35 times the speed of sound.

As expected, communications were temporarily lost for six minutes as plasma built up around the spacecraft, blocking signals — a routine but nerve-wracking phase of any re-entry.

Contact was successfully restored as the capsule descended further into the atmosphere.

Parachute deployment followed in stages, beginning with smaller drogues to stabilise the capsule before three main parachutes slowed its descent to under 200 feet per second.

At 00:07 GMT, the spacecraft splashed down precisely on schedule in the Pacific Ocean off the coast of San Diego, landing within a mile of its intended target.

Recovery operations were swift and well-coordinated. By 00:34 GMT, the astronauts had exited the capsule for the first time since launch and were transferred to an inflatable recovery boat. Shortly after, they were airlifted by helicopter to the USS John P. Murtha, where medical teams conducted initial health assessments.

The successful conclusion of Artemis II is widely seen as a crucial step in NASA’s long-term strategy to return humans to the Moon, establish a sustainable lunar presence, and lay the groundwork for future missions to Mars. The mission’s achievements are expected to shape the next phase of human space exploration for decades to come.
