The National Vice Chairman of the Labour Party in the South-West, Dr. Arabambi Abayomi, has strongly dismissed the recent claims and actions of Governor Alex Otti, Senator Nenadi Usman and Senator Darlington Nwokocha, describing them as baseless and politically desperate.
In a detailed statement released on January 12, 2026, Arabambi reaffirmed the legitimacy of the Barrister Julius Abure-led National Working Committee, insisting that the Labour Party remains stable, constitutionally guided and fully recognized by the electoral authorities.

(1) A house built on a foundation of truth may weather any storm, but a castle constructed in the air, on pillars of mischief and falsehood, is destined to collapse under the weight of its own illusion. It is in the context of this immutable principle that I address the recent theatrical and utterly baseless pronouncements emanating from a gathering of suspended individuals, masquerading as a National Working Committee of the Labour Party.
(2) I spent some time this weekend reading Senator Darlington Nwokocha’s communiqué, which he put out for a group led by Senator Nenadi Usman and backed by Governor Alex Otti, with Peter Obi—now off on another futile venture—as a fellow traveler. Frankly, it isn’t a serious political document. It’s an exercise in political escapism, designed to confuse and invent conflict where there is none.
(3) This response isn’t just about correcting facts. It’s about taking apart, piece by piece, the shaky premise of this whole charade, which I’ll do by drawing on the clear record of our party’s recent journey.
(4) To understand the present farce, one must first acknowledge the hard-won stability that precedes it. The Labour Party has emerged from a period of immense internal and external pressure—a crucible that tested its structures and its spirit. Following the unprecedented public energy of the 2023 general elections, the party faced a predictable onslaught: coordinated legal challenges, intense media scrutiny, and pressure from entrenched political interests threatened by its rise. Through this, the National Working Committee under Barrister Julius Abure navigated a labyrinth of court cases, not with the flash of grandstanding, but with the grit of legal rigor and constitutional fidelity. The landmark Supreme Court judgment of April 4th, 2025, often misrepresented by our detractors, was in fact a vindication of this approach. It did not “sack” anyone; it powerfully reaffirmed the democratic tenet that party leadership is an internal affair, a matter for members, not judges. This ruling was not an end but a beginning—the closing of a chaotic chapter of external interference and the opening of a phase dedicated to organic institution-building.
(5)It is precisely into this hard-earned calm that the Nenadi-Otti faction has chosen to throw a stone, hoping the ripples will be mistaken for a tidal wave. The core of their argument, repeated with the forlorn hope of a mantra becoming truth through incantation, rests on a wilful and grotesque misreading of a recent INEC statement. To claim that INEC’s administrative caution over a specific, sub-national election—rooted in pending litigation—somehow translates to a repudiation of the national leadership, is an intellectual leap of such staggering audacity it borders on the fantastical. It is the equivalent of a weather report for Abuja being used to declare a national monsoon. This is not political analysis; it is alchemy of the lowest order, attempting to spin bureaucratic straw into a narrative of legitimacy.
(6) The truth, as solid and verifiable as the granite of the Udi Hills, is found in action, not in selective interpretation. Since the Supreme Court’s clarion call for party autonomy, INEC, under its respected leadership, has normalized and regularized its relationship with the Abure-led NWC. This is a documented reality, visible to those who observe deeds over words. INEC officials have physically attended and monitored our National Executive Committee meeting—a gathering of the party’s highest constitutional organ. They have reintegrated our leadership into the critical quarterly consultative meetings with political parties. The processes for the upcoming off-cycle governorship elections are proceeding seamlessly through the recognized national secretariat. These are not the actions of an institution in doubt. INEC has moved forward. It is only this faction that remains stuck in the expired narrative of a crisis they so desperately wish was real.
(7)Their statement is full of self-important language, using “affirm” this and “reaffirm” that as if they’re crowning a king. They declare Governor Alex Otti the “National Leader,” a title that means nothing. It’s not in our party rules; it’s just something they made up. To me, this shows Governor Otti isn’t here to help the Labour Party—he’s here to take it over. He’s trying to use his position as a governor to control a national movement, and that’s a fundamental mistake.
(8)The Labour Party isn’t some trophy to be captured after an election win elsewhere. We’re an institution built over decades. Our strength comes from our shared beliefs, our collective will, and the hard, often unseen, work of organizers across the country. It doesn’t come from the temporary spotlight of one person.
(9) Let us be unequivocal: the party’s internal democratic processes are in motion. The legitimate NWC is currently overseeing a nationwide membership revalidation and registration drive—a grassroots re-engagement that has been met with enthusiastic response, a silent rebuke to the noise from Abuja hotels. Congresses are being scheduled in line with our constitution, not as a reaction to impostors, but as the natural, cyclical rhythm of party life. This is the real work: unglamorous, structured, and vital. The faction’s mimicry of this language—“10-million-strong base,” “congresses”—is the political equivalent of decorating a ruin. You cannot build a house while actively denying the existence of its foundation and the title deeds of its owner.
(10) Furthermore, the personal trajectories of the principal actors betray a desperate and cynical gambit. Their proclaimed “principal,” His Excellency Mr. Peter Obi, in pursuit of his political destiny, has moved to the ADC. We wish him well. Senator Nenadi Usman, their so-called Chairman, is widely reported to be following the same path. Senator Darlington Nwokocha, whom the party entrusted with a Senate ticket—a mandate he won but subsequently lost through a failure to mount a robust defence—now orchestrates press statements for a committee whose very raison d’être has evaporated. They are politically stateless, attempting to commandeer a vessel that has already sailed, its course set by due process and legal affirmation.
(11) In conclusion, this episode is not a serious challenge. It is the last, fading echo of a dissolved discord. It is a damaging, albeit transparent, act of political demarketing, born from the bitterness of being on the outside looking in. It is a strategy to create a façade of crisis to justify defection and to tarnish a party that refuses to be bent to the will of a few.
(12) To the Nigerian public, we say: see this for what it is. Look beyond the smoke and mirrors. The Labour Party, fortified by the courts, recognized by the electoral commission, and energized by its members, is intact and marching forward. Our ideology is our compass, our constitution is our guide, and our recognized leadership is our helm. The desperate theatre of Governor Otti, Senator Nenadi, and Senator Nwokocha is a sideshow—a distracting pantomime performed on a stage they built in a room we vacated long ago. They are ghosts knocking on the walls of a vibrant, living institution. We hear the sound, but we are not distracted, for we are too busy with the work of building, organising, and preparing to offer Nigerians the credible, ideologically sound alternative they truly deserve.
(13) Finally the trio are advised to visit any Competent Doctor to perform urgent operations to cures them from phantasmagoria , Somnambulism and pseudologia fantastica.
