Anambra man arrested over alleged Oyo revenge killing plot

Operatives of the Oyo State Police Command have arrested a man, Kingsley Odo, who allegedly travelled from Anambra State to Oyo State to avenge the deaths of his father and brother.

The command’s spokesperson, Olayinka Ayanlade, disclosed this in a video shared on the X account of Oyo Affairs on Monday.

Ayanlade said the suspect was arrested by operatives of the Safer Highways during a stop-and-search operation along Ife Road.

He said the operatives recovered a locally made, cut-to-size pistol and a cartridge from the suspect, adding that preliminary questioning revealed that he had travelled from Anambra State with the alleged intention of carrying out a revenge killing.

“He came all the way from Anambra to avenge the deaths of his father and brother. The operatives of the Safer Highways, while conducting a stop-and-search operation along Ife Road, intercepted a commercial bus.

“During a search, they discovered a cut-to-size pistol and a cartridge. Further questioning revealed that he had travelled all the way from Anambra State to carry out a revenge killing,” the spokesperson said.

Speaking to journalists, Odo said he had been working in Benue State since 2021 before receiving information that his brother, who was schooling in Awka, Anambra State, had been murdered.

He said his mother died a few weeks after his brother’s death, prompting him to vow to avenge his brother’s killing.

“Since 2021, I have been working in Benue State. My brother was schooling in Awka, and I received information that he had died and that somebody killed him in the school.

“When the matter was going on, I came back. A few weeks after my brother died, my mother also died. So, I told my brother that the person who killed him would face the consequences. Since then, the matter has been going on,” Odo said.

The suspect also admitted that he bought the recovered pistol from a friend who was a hunter for N20,000.

“I bought the pistol from my friend, who is a hunter. He sold it to me for N20,000,” he said.

Odo further disclosed that he had received information that the person allegedly responsible for his brother’s death was living in a Yoruba-speaking state, although he claimed not to know the exact location.

He said he was being guided by the person who supplied the information before the police intercepted him.

“I got information that the boy was living in a Yoruba state, so I decided to find out where he was living. Along the way, I was caught by the police.

“I was coming from Awka to take revenge, but I did not know the exact place. The information given to me by the person leading me was with me. I belong to the Vikings cult group,” he said.

Ayanlade said the suspect was undergoing further investigation to establish his alleged connections and determine the circumstances surrounding the incident.

He commended the Safer Highways operatives for their vigilance, saying the arrest had helped prevent a possible violent incident.

The spokesperson added that investigations were ongoing to establish the full extent of the suspect’s alleged involvement and identify any other persons connected to the case.
