Anambra Government Again Profiles Peter Obi, Exposes $123million World Bank Loans, Unpaid Salaries, Says His Claim Of Zero Debt Is ‘Accountancy 101 Failure’
The state government said it had quietly been paying billions of Naira to service debts inherited from the Obi administration, contrary to his persistent denials.

The Anambra State government has fired a blistering rebuttal at former Governor Peter Obi over his recent claims that he left no debts or unpaid salaries and pensions, accusing him of deliberate falsehood, hypocrisy, and a dangerous lack of understanding of governance.
In a statement issued in Awka on Saturday and made available to SaharaReporters, the state government said it was compelled to respond after Obi, during an interview on Arise TV on September 24, 2026, threw a “bombshell challenge” to anyone to prove he owed one person any salary or contractor debt, even staking his presidential bid on the claim.
The state government said it had quietly been paying billions of Naira to service debts inherited from the Obi administration, contrary to his persistent denials.
Providing what it described as “unassailable evidence,” the Anambra State Government revealed that Obi’s administration signed eight loans from the IDA-World Bank over his eight-year tenure, totaling $123,771,179.30.
It alleged that he even disbursed some of the funds before leaving office but “deceptively concealed these from his handover notes.”
The state government disclosed that as of June 30, 2026, the Debt Management Office (DMO) reported an outstanding balance of $92.35 million, equivalent to N127.37 billion, which successive administrations, including the current one, have continued to service through monthly FAAC deductions.
“It is a pitiable sight seeing our respected former governor showing a lack of understanding and almost insinuating that he did not know that he borrowed even after signing for the loan,” the statement said. “H.E. Peter Obi, you do not have to ‘go to a bank or DMO’ before your borrowing can be perfected. All that is required is for you to sign the loan agreements and your government did.”
Dismissing Obi’s claim that he owed no salaries or pensions, the state government noted that Obi had callously suggested that Anambra State Water Corporation workers were not on the state’s schedule of payment.
“The facts contradict H.E. Peter Obi,” the statement said. “The records show that he owed over 700 staff of the Anambra State Water Corporation their salaries, pensions, and gratuities. An Arbitration Panel in 2009 as well as the National Industrial Court judgement of 2019 confirmed that the State Government owed the workers.”
The government revealed that after the court judgement, it opted for an out-of-court settlement on February 26, 2024, for a total sum of N1,563,143,020.13. So far, N1,199,762,000 has been paid, with the last tranche pending.
It also noted that 11 months of pension arrears owed to primary school teachers, inherited from Gov. Mbadinuju, remained unpaid by Obi till date, leaving teachers to “languish and die in agony and penury.”
The state government also mocked Obi’s defense that he saved $150 million in banks to earn interest, arguing that the purpose of development is to save money rather than ensure the safety and welfare of citizens.
“It is Accountancy 101. In this case, you exaggerated the asset side but concealed and lied about the liabilities side,” the government said, scoring Obi an ‘F’ grade. “Does it make any social or economic sense for a government to be collecting taxes from its impoverished residents and saving same in bank accounts for ‘interests’ while millions of its citizens, over 50%, were in dire poverty with rising insecurity, decayed infrastructure, literally dead public health and public educational systems… no pipe-borne water, urban decay, no power plant, no airport, no government house/lodge, over 900 active gully erosion sites, etc.?”
The Anambra Government further accused Obi of propagating a dangerous trend where there are two sets of standards: one for everyone else and another for him.
It noted that while Obi spent eight years demarketing his predecessors, Dr. Mbadinuju and Dr. Ngige, and has spent the last 13 years with his media team demarketing his successors, he cries foul when confronted with inconvenient facts.
“Only Peter Obi has the right to lie about and against any and everyone, and if you dare to expose his lies, you must be the ‘sinner’, the ‘saboteur’,” the statement said, adding that his recent political somersaults—supporting APGA and President Jonathan in 2011, but condemning APGA for supporting President Tinubu in 2026—expose his glaring hypocrisy.
“Those who love H.E. Peter Obi should advise him to STOP LYING AS A HABIT SO AS TO AVOID THE CONSTANT EMBARRASSMENT OF CONFRONTING INCONVENIENT FACTS AND TRUTHS,” the government stated.
