Anambra Community Women Protest Killing Of 23-Year-Old Mmesoma Over Breakup, Demand Expulsion Of Ebonyi Indigenes

Some of the women, speaking in the Igbo language, described Abakaliki people as “Boko Haram,” chanting: “Abakaliki must go. They have killed us. They are Boko Haram and we don’t need them among us.”

Angry women in Aguata Local Government Area of Anambra State, under the aegis of Umu-Ada Uga, have staged a protest at the police area command in Uga, demanding justice for the late 23-year-old Mmesoma Umeorini, who was brutally murdered by her boyfriend, Chima Ofoeke.

Ofoeke is reported from Abakaliki in Ebonyi State.

In a video clip seen by SaharaReporters, the women, who trooped out in their numbers, were seen chanting dirge songs and demanding the immediate expulsion of all indigenes of Abakaliki, the Ebonyi State capital, living among them.

Some of the women, speaking in the Igbo language, described Abakaliki people as “Boko Haram,” chanting: “Abakaliki must go. They have killed us. They are Boko Haram and we don’t need them among us.”

One woman, who appeared to be the leader of the protesting women, said they were protesting the gruesome killing of Mmesoma by her ex-boyfriend, stressing that her rejection of him did not justify murder.

PROTESTERS

“We are protesting against the killing of Mmesoma by her ex-boyfriend. That she rejected him doesn’t justify her killing,” she said in Igbo.

The protest comes amid rising tensions in the state. SaharaReporters had earlier reported that a human rights lawyer, Ikechukwu Obasi, raised an urgent alarm over a disturbing trend of extrajudicial killings in Uga, revealing that two Abakaliki boys had already been murdered in a reprisal attack, with threats to hunt for eight more.

Obasi had warned that two wrongs do not make a right, describing the reprisal attacks as “insensitive collective punishment” and a “crime against humanity.” He called on the Anambra State Governor, Prof. Charles Soludo, and the police to immediately deploy security to halt any further bloodshed.

SaharaReporters had earlier reported that a young man who identified himself as Emmanuel (Chima Ofoeke) from Ebonyi State confessed to killing his ex-girlfriend, Mmesoma, from Uga in Aguata LGA, after she ended their relationship.

Mmesoma was declared missing on Friday, October 16, 2026, before her decomposing body was later discovered inside a bag in Uga on Friday, October 23.

In a video that went viral on social media, the suspect confessed to the crime while being questioned by security operatives following his arrest.

“I killed her because she broke up with me. I killed her in my house in Uga, put her inside a bag and dumped her somewhere,” he said.

Following the viral confession, the Anambra State Police Command confirmed the arrest of Chima over the killing.

The police said the victim’s mother had reported her disappearance to the Divisional Police Officer of Umuchu Division after efforts to establish her daughter’s whereabouts proved unsuccessful. Operatives, acting on intelligence, collaborated with members of the Agunechemba security outfit in Uga to arrest the suspect.

The command’s spokesperson, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, said the suspect allegedly confessed during preliminary interrogation to killing the woman following the breakdown of their relationship, and subsequently led detectives to the location where her remains were recovered.

Ikenga said the Commissioner of Police, Nnanna Oji Ama, had directed that the case be transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) in Awka for a comprehensive investigation to ensure justice is served.

While the police investigation continues, the escalating tension in Uga has left residents on edge, with many calling for calm to prevent the situation from degenerating into full-blown ethnic violence between the Anambra and Ebonyi communities.
