All Tinubu’s Road Projects Will Last 100 Years with Concrete Technology – Umahi

Federal Government Shifts Focus to Long-Term Infrastructure
The Minister of Works, Dave Umahi, has declared that President Bola Tinubu’s administration is building roads designed to last over 100 years, thanks to a strategic shift to concrete pavement technology.

Speaking to journalists during an inspection of major highway projects in the southwest, Umahi highlighted the durability and long-term value of concrete over traditional asphalt.xdre

Why Concrete Over Asphalt?
While inspecting the Sagamu-Ijebu-Ode-Benin Expressway and Section Two of the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway (from Sagamu Interchange to Ojoo, Ibadan), Umahi explained the government’s rationale behind the material shift in federal road construction.

“Show me any asphalt road in this country that has lasted 50 years. We are not just constructing roads; we are building roads that will last over 100 years.

Even the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway is already failing in some portions.

But the concrete road built in my state in the 1950s is still standing. We are not just constructing roads; we are building roads that will last over 100 years.”

Inspection Tour Highlights Government’s Road Strategy
The minister’s inspection tour reflects the administration’s push for sustainable and cost-effective infrastructure. Concrete pavement, while initially more expensive, offers long-term durability, reduced maintenance, and better performance under Nigeria’s diverse climate and heavy-duty usage.

Umahi, a civil engineer and former governor, has long advocated for modernizing Nigeria’s road construction standards to align with global best practices.
