Akpabio Seeks Reversal Of Judgement On Sen. Akpoti-Uduaghan.
President of the Senate, Godswill Akpabio, has approached the Abuja Division of the Court of Appeal seeking the reversal of Justice Binta Murtala-Nyako of the Federal High Court, Abuja.
Justice Nyako had in her judgement on July 4, 2025, ordered the Senate to recall the suspended Kogi State Senator, Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan.
The court found her guilty of contempt of court and subsequently fined her the sum of N5 million and also ordered the Kogi senator to tender an apology.
The court heard and reserved judgement in the appeal and cross appeal filed by Sen. Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan and Senate President Godswill Akpabio over the lower court’s decision on the former’s suit that sought to stop the Senate’s investigation of her alleged misconduct.
A three-member panel of justices of the appellate court reserved the judgment after counsel to the parties adopted their processes and argued their case for and against the appeals.
The senate president had approached the Court of Appeal to challenge the Federal High Court judgment that judgment of Jistice Nyako.
Akpabio’s legal team had challenged the jurisdiction of the lower court, arguing that the matter bordered on the internal affairs of the National Assembly and is therefore insulated from judicial review under Section 251 of the 1999 Constitution.
The lower court had declared her six-month suspension unconstitutional, excessive, and a violation of the senator’s constituents’ right to representation.
