Authorities in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) have rescued several children from an orphanage after shocking revelations of severe neglect, abuse, and maltreatment by its proprietors.

According to findings from a recent investigation, the orphanage failed to meet the minimum standards of care for vulnerable children, leaving them exposed to extreme hardship and emotional trauma.

During the inspection, investigators described harrowing scenes of abuse. Some children bore visible scars of mistreatment, including burns, bruises, and untreated injuries. One child was reportedly scalded with hot water, leaving his body badly scarred. Another, malnourished and visibly weak, carried marks of repeated beatings, while yet another was found with a broken leg.

Despite these conditions, officials discovered that the facility had a storehouse stocked with food and clothing, raising serious questions about why the children were left in such dire states. Observers expressed shock at the contrast between the abundance of supplies and the rags the children were forced to wear.

Confirming the development, the FCT Commissioner of Police, Ajao Adewale Saka, said the victims have been secured and placed under protective custody. He assured the public that the suspects responsible for the abuse will be prosecuted.

“This is terrible. The living condition of these children is nothing to write home about. We have secured them, and justice will take its course,” the commissioner reportedly stated.

The case has sparked widespread outrage and renewed calls for stricter monitoring of orphanages and child care facilities across Nigeria, many of which operate with little or no regulation.
