In an interview on The Legacy Series, Bode George, a retired Commodore in the Nigerian Navy, stated that he was dismissed from the military after asking Head of State General Sani Abacha to release Moshood Kashimawo Olawale (MKO) Abiola

George said after Abiola was arrested in 1994 for declaring himself president in Epetedo area of Lagos, a senior officers’ meeting was held.

He stated that he served as the secretary of the meeting, while Abacha was the chairman, and all top military and police officers were present.

George said he told Abacha that Abiola was not a threat to his military government and pleaded with him to release Abiola. He stated that by the following week, he was dismissed from the military.

In George’s words: “I said ‘Sir, you have accused him that he went to my area in Epetedo and called himself president. Is that the man who wants to do a coup? If he actually went there and declared himself president you should know that something is not right.

If you want to do treasonable felony you go to the radio or television station and announce that you have taken over, not Epetedo’.

I said, ‘Sir, let us leave him and let him go. You have given us the program of operation and that fell in my purview’. I just heard next.
