British actor and comedian, Russell Brand, has been convicted of raping one woman and sexually assaulting three others following a four-week trial at Southwark Crown Court in London, United Kingdom, on Thursday.
According to a report by Fox News, the 51-year-old was found guilty of one count of rape and three counts of sexual assault involving four women.
He was acquitted of two additional rape charges and one count of attempted indecent assault.
Brand had pleaded not guilty to all seven charges and denied forcing any of the women into sexual activity without their consent.
The offences were alleged to have occurred between 1999 and 2009, involving six women who accused the comedian of sexual misconduct at different locations, including a hotel, a bar, a radio station, a workplace and his London residence.
Following the verdict, Judge Joel Bennathan told Brand that his convictions meant he would inevitably receive a significant prison sentence.
The judge subsequently refused his bail application and ordered that he remain in custody until his sentencing hearing on Monday, November 9.
The Crown Prosecution Service (CPS), in a statement issued after the verdict, said Brand had used his celebrity status to commit sexual offences against women.
David Roberts, Senior Crown Prosecutor in the CPS London Rape and Serious Sexual Assault Unit, said: “Russell Brand was predatory and used his celebrity status to commit sexual crimes.
He was a manipulator with an insatiable desire to get what he wanted regardless of whether consent was given or not.”
Roberts added that the women demonstrated courage by coming forward and participating in the prosecution, despite the time that had passed since the alleged incidents.
During the trial, Brand maintained that his sexual encounters with the women were consensual.
He acknowledged that he had been reckless in pursuing sexual relationships while using his fame but insisted that he had never forced anyone into sexual activity.
Brand had previously described consent as “fundamental, essential and necessary” while defending himself against the allegations.
The case followed a joint investigation by British media organisations Channel 4 and The Sunday Times, published in September 2023, which featured allegations of sexual abuse and misconduct against the comedian.
The investigation prompted several women to come forward, leading to a police investigation and subsequent criminal charges.
The CPS said the convictions demonstrate that fame and public status do not change the importance of consent, adding that victims of sexual offences can report incidents regardless of how much time has passed
Brand is expected to return to Southwark Crown Court on Monday for sentencing, where the judge will determine the prison term for the offences.
