Police Rescue Farmer’s Murder Suspects From Mob as Two Officers Sustain Gunshot Injuries in Ondo

Irate youths in Ala, Akure North Local Government Area of Ondo State, allegedly opened fire on a police tactical team conveying two suspects accused of killing a farmer, leaving two police officers injured.

The incident occurred in the early hours of Tuesday, October 27, 2026, following a violent confrontation between the youths and the police over attempts to take the suspects into their custody for alleged extrajudicial killing.

The Ondo State Police Command disclosed that 14 suspects had been arrested in connection with the attack on police officers, the police facility and the rescue team, adding that normalcy had since returned to the community.

The crisis followed the killing of a farmer, identified as Rasheed Hassan, whose death was reported to the police on October 24, 2026, after his body was discovered at General Camp in the Government Reserve area.

According to the police, operatives who visited the scene observed deep cuts on the victim’s head and other parts of his body, while his belongings were reportedly missing.

Investigations were subsequently launched to identify and apprehend those responsible for the killing.

The situation reportedly escalated on October 26 when the Ala Youth President arrested two suspects in connection with the incident and was conveying them to the police station for further action.

However, the youth leader was reportedly confronted by an angry crowd demanding that the suspects be handed over to them for jungle justice.

He subsequently sought refuge at the Ala Divisional Police Headquarters with the suspects, but the mob allegedly pursued them to the facility and attacked the police station.

The police said the crowd became increasingly violent, throwing stones and other dangerous objects at the facility while resisting efforts by police rescue teams to gain access to the area.

As the situation deteriorated, tactical and other rescue teams were deployed to restore order and protect lives.

At about 1:45 a.m. on October 27, police operatives successfully rescued the two suspects from the mob.

However, the patrol team conveying the suspects back to Akure reportedly came under attack, with two police officers sustaining gunshot injuries from pellets allegedly fired from a pump-action firearm wielded by a youth.

The injured officers were immediately taken to a nearby hospital for urgent medical attention.

Following the attack, the police arrested 14 suspects over their alleged involvement in the assault on officers and attacks on the police facility and rescue team.

The Command said investigations were ongoing to establish the individual roles of those arrested and ensure that anyone found culpable was prosecuted in accordance with the law.

To prevent further violence, the police maintained tactical deployments in the area, while security monitoring continued despite the reported return of normalcy.

The Commissioner of Police, Ondo State Command, CP Felix Ohagwu, condemned the attack, describing mob action and attempts to obstruct lawful police operations as unacceptable.

Ohagwu warned that no individual or group had the right to take the law into their own hands, irrespective of the seriousness of an alleged crime.

He said the Command would not tolerate attacks on police facilities, assaults on officers or any attempt to undermine lawful police operations.

The police commissioner also assured residents that investigations into Hassan’s death and the violence that followed were being conducted, stressing that anyone found culpable would face the full weight of the law.

He urged residents to remain calm, cooperate with security agencies and provide credible information that could assist the investigation.

Community leaders and youth groups were also urged to discourage mob action and allow the criminal justice system to take its course.
