An All Progressives Congress (APC) chieftain, Mrs Funmi Hasstrup, has allegedly threatened voters at Ward 4, Units 4 and 5, in Ikire, Irewole Local Government Area of Osun State, during Saturday’s governorship election.
Hasstrup was seen and heard in a video obtained by SaharaReporters warning voters against casting their ballots for candidates other than the APC governorship candidate, Bola Oyebamiji.
She was heard saying, “Whoever doesn’t vote Ambo won’t leave the unit in freewill.”
In the video, Hasstrup was also heard issuing a direct threat to voters who refused to support the APC candidate.
“If you vote for anyone that is not Ambo (APC candidate), you will not go home.”
“I have put someone there to ensure this,” she said, threatening voters to dare her and vote.
The alleged threat comes amid reports of intimidation, disruption and other irregularities in different parts of Osun State as voters participated in the governorship election.
Earlier, SaharaReporters reported that voters at Ward 9, Unit 3, in Ikire, Irewole Local Government Area, alleged that they were prevented from exercising their franchise because they were unwilling to vote for the APC governorship candidate, Bola Oyebamiji.
The allegation emerged as voters across the state headed to polling units to cast their ballots, with reports of tension and disruptions in some areas.
A voter, Adeosun Folashade, who spoke about the situation at the polling unit, alleged that supporters of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) and members of other political parties were prevented from voting.
According to her, those at the polling unit allegedly insisted that voters should support only the APC candidate.
She said, “At ward nine unit 3, in Ikire they didn’t allow Accord Party members to vote, they said it’s only one party people are allowed to vote for. They said it’s only All Progressives Congress party candidate Bola Oyebamiji we should vote for, we do not want it like that.
The ward in dispute is said to be that of the APC governorship candidate’s wife, Bola Oyebamiji.
The reported incident involving Hasstrup adds to growing concerns over alleged attempts to intimidate voters and restrict their choices during the election.
Earlier, SaharaReporters also reported that a notorious thug allegedly loyal to the APC, identified as “Big Hammer,” reportedly disrupted voting at the polling unit of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) governorship candidate, Najeem Salam, in Ejigbo Local Government Area of Osun State.
The incident occurred as voters across the state went to polling units to cast their ballots.
According to reports, the alleged disruption created panic among voters, election agents and residents, forcing some people to flee the area.
A video seen by SaharaReporters showed voters and election agents running in different directions amid the reported incident.
One of the persons captured in the video narrated how they were forced to jump over a fence while attempting to escape the attack.
“We had to jump the fence to escape, this is very uncalled for,” the victim said.
The incident further heightened concerns over violence and intimidation during the governorship election, with several reports emerging from different parts of the state over alleged attacks and disruptions.
In another video obtained by SaharaReporters, a vehicle was seen damaged while residents expressed concern over the violence and destruction associated with the election.
Residents were heard lamenting that an electoral process meant to allow citizens to freely choose their preferred candidates had degenerated into violence and destruction.
The alleged disruption at Salam’s polling unit is particularly significant given that the ADC candidate is one of the major contenders in the election, while political tensions have remained high across Osun State during voting and the commencement of collation.
The reported threats in Ikire, alongside the separate allegations of voters being prevented from voting and disruptions at polling units, have raised fresh concerns about whether voters are being allowed to freely exercise their constitutional right to choose their preferred candidates.
