Outrage as 25-Year-Old NYSC Doctor Dies After Alleged Three-Week Sick Leave Denial

A wave of outrage has swept across Nigeria following the death of Dr. Wisdom Oghenetega Enakirerhi, a 25-year-old medical doctor serving under the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), after his request for sick leave was allegedly delayed for three weeks.

According to reports, the young doctor fell seriously ill during his service year and repeatedly sought permission to return home for proper medical treatment. However, his request was allegedly not approved despite his deteriorating health.

A fellow doctor, Dr. Akpoyibo, who shared the heartbreaking story online, revealed that Enakirerhi had spent seven years studying medicine and had completed his internship before beginning his mandatory NYSC service. He further claimed that the doctor’s father and brother—both medical practitioners—also pleaded with authorities to allow him to seek urgent medical care, but their appeals were reportedly ignored.

Reports say approval for the sick leave eventually came, but only days before the young doctor’s death.

The tragic incident has sparked widespread reactions on social media, with many Nigerians and healthcare professionals demanding answers from the NYSC and calling for better welfare and healthcare support for corps members.

As of the time of filing this report, the NYSC has not issued an official statement addressing the allegations surrounding the delayed sick leave request or the circumstances of Dr. Enakirerhi’s death.
