Nigeria Police Recall Retired Officers As Ad-Hoc Instructors For Training Of 50,000 New Constables
A police wireless message dated May 29, 2026, and obtained by SaharaReporters, revealed that the directive was issued by the Department of Training and Development (DTD) at the Force Headquarters, Abuja.
The Nigeria Police Force has commenced preparations for the training of 50,000 new police constables, directing police training institutions across the country to identify and document retired officers who can be recalled as ad-hoc training staff.
A police wireless message dated May 29, 2026, and obtained by SaharaReporters, revealed that the directive was issued by the Department of Training and Development (DTD) at the Force Headquarters, Abuja.
According to the signal, addressed to commandants and heads of police colleges and training schools nationwide, authorities instructed institutions to compile details of retired police personnel who previously served as directing staff and drill instructors.
The message, marked “M/IMMEDIATE” and referenced CE:2100/DTD/ERDC/FHQ/ABJ/VOL.9/672, stated that only retired officers who are physically fit and willing to serve should be considered for documentation.
The directive was sent to several police training institutions, including Staff College Jos, Police Colleges in Kaduna, Maiduguri, Ikeja, Oji-River, Enugu, and various Mobile Police and refresher training schools across the country.
The Force Headquarters requested that submissions include the officers’ names, dates of retirement, training institutions where they served, educational qualifications, areas of specialization, email addresses, phone numbers, and copies of their retirement certificates.
Police authorities directed that all returns be forwarded to the Department of Training and Development through a designated email address no later than June 8, 2026.
The signal read: “RE: Recruitment of 50,000 Police Constables. NIGPOL DTD directs you identify and document accordingly. Retired police officers who have previously served yours as directing staff drill instructors, ensure officers to be documented, must be physically fit, willing to serve as ad-hoc staff for forthcoming recruit constables training returns to reach mine not later than 08/06/2026.
