Sowore strongly criticised the prevailing socio-economic conditions in the country, arguing that widespread unemployment and corruption have continued to undermine national development and frustrate young Nigerians seeking opportunities.
Human rights activist and the 2023 presidential flag bearer of the African Action Congress (AAC), Omoyele Sowore, has vowed to drive a ‘revolutionary change’ in Nigeria, insisting that the country must break away from entrenched systems of corruption, unemployment, and political decay.
Sowore made the remarks during his welcome address at the ongoing AAC party primaries held in Abuja, where delegates from across the federation gathered to participate in the party’s internal democratic process ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Addressing supporters and party members, Sowore strongly criticised the prevailing socio-economic conditions in the country, arguing that widespread unemployment and corruption have continued to undermine national development and frustrate young Nigerians seeking opportunities.
“We are tired of unemployment, corruption and we are ready to ensure revolutionary change in the country.”
He further positioned the AAC as a unique political platform, claiming it remains the only party willing to speak truthfully about Nigeria’s challenges without political compromise or distortion.
“We are the only party committed to the truth and committed to saying it.just the way it is.”
Sowore also responded to discussions around political coalitions, dismissing the idea that traditional political alliances were necessary for meaningful change. According to him, the real coalition lies in the people themselves, particularly the delegates and supporters of the AAC present at the primaries.
“They asked us if we are not forming a coalition and we asked them where the coalition are. You (refering to delegates at the event) are the true coalition.”
He emphasised that the delegates in attendance represented a broad national spread, citing their presence from states across Nigeria, including Sokoto, Imo, Osun, Ekiti, Lagos, Jigawa, and several others, which he said reflects the party’s grassroots structure and nationwide outreach.
The AAC leader’s remarks come amid renewed political activity within the party. Earlier reports by SaharaReporters indicated that Sowore had declared his intention to contest Nigeria’s presidency again in 2027, stressing that the country requires a decisive departure from what he described as a “same failed political class” responsible for persistent insecurity, corruption, and economic hardship.
Speaking during an interview on Channels Television’s Politics Today, Sowore confirmed that he would once again seek the nation’s highest office, stating, “Yes. We have our party primaries next week.” However, he clarified that his candidacy was not automatic, noting that the final decision would be made by party members through the primary process.
“Well, let the party decide who their candidates are,” he said.
In preparation for the 2027 elections, the African Action Congress has also announced the commencement of its Expression of Interest (EoI) process for aspirants seeking elective positions. The party said the initiative is aimed at promoting transparency, inclusiveness, and credible leadership within Nigeria’s democratic space.
According to a statement signed by its National Publicity Secretary, Rex Elanu, the process is part of the party’s broader effort to deepen participation and strengthen internal democracy as it positions itself for the upcoming general elections.
