Nigeria’s opposition space may be heading toward a significant realignment ahead of the 2027 general elections, following deepening divisions within the African Democratic Congress (ADC).

Speaking at a stakeholders’ meeting in Abuja, Buba Galadima said former Vice President Atiku Abubakar sidelined key figures within the coalition, triggering discontent among major stakeholders.

The development comes amid growing indications that former Anambra State governor Peter Obi and former Kano State governor Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso are considering a departure from the ADC over disagreements surrounding the party’s internal structure and strategy for the 2027 elections.

Sources familiar with the discussions say both politicians are exploring the possibility of aligning with a proposed political platform, reportedly known as the Nigeria Democratic Congress, said to have links to former Bayelsa State governor Seriake Dickson, although no official confirmation has been issued.

Galadima, a prominent figure in the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP), warned that tensions within the opposition could escalate, stating that certain interests are attempting to dominate the coalition process. He added that opposition figures are facing increasing pressure, including media attacks and political intimidation.

“We are already at a critical point. If there is a political confrontation, we are prepared to respond intellectually,” he said.

Also speaking at the meeting, businessman Isaac Fayose said the emerging political movement backing Obi and Kwankwaso has gained traction across several states.

Meanwhile, activist Aisha Yesufu called for unity among Nigerians, urging political actors to move beyond ethnic and regional divisions in pursuit of national development.
