US Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth confirmed the attack, stating that an American submarine targeted and destroyed the vessel with a torpedo.
Hegseth said that in the Indian Ocean, the US sank “an Iranian warship that thought it was safe in international waters”.
“Instead it was sunk by a torpedo,” he said.
The defense secretary did not name the Iranian ship that was attacked.
However, earlier, the Sri Lankan navy reported that the IRIS Dena went down in the Indian Ocean off the coast of Galle, with around 140 people on board missing.
The sinking marks a major escalation in tensions as US-Israeli military operations continue across the region.
Meanwhile, Israel says it struck “security headquarters” across Tehran as part of ongoing air operations inside Iran. Residents in the capital have described worsening conditions.

“It’s getting worse and worse every day,” and unnamed man in Tehran was quoted by the BBC as saying.

According to reports, U.S. intelligence and allied sources traced the plot to Maqdam, who was allegedly responsible for coordinating covert operations targeting Western political figures.
Journalist Amit Segal reported that Maqdam was “the man reportedly behind the assassination attempt on Donald Trump before the 2024 election.”
The alleged plot was reportedly intercepted before it could be carried out, with U.S. and allied security services monitoring suspected operatives linked to Maqdam.
