Police Confirm Bandits Torch Police Station, Burn Church, Abduct Five In Niger Community

Police Public Relations Officer, SP Wasiu Abiodun, said the assailants stormed the Agwara Police Station in the early hours of Sunday, leading to a fierce confrontation with officers on duty.

The Niger State Police Command has confirmed that suspected bandits attacked Agwara community in Niger State, setting a police station and part of a church ablaze and abducting at least five residents in a coordinated early-morning assault.

The incident occurred on Sunday at about 3:40 a.m., according to the police.

In a statement issued in Minna, the Police Public Relations Officer, SP Wasiu Abiodun, said the assailants stormed the Agwara Police Station in the early hours of Sunday, leading to a fierce confrontation with officers on duty.

According to him, a police tactical team engaged the attackers, but the bandits later overpowered the officers and allegedly used explosives, suspected to be dynamite, to set the police facility on fire.

Abiodun added that after torching the police station, the attackers moved to the United Methodist Church (UMC) in the same community, where they set part of the church building ablaze.

The police spokesperson further disclosed that the assailants went on to other parts of Agwara community, where they abducted about five persons. The identities of the victims were yet to be established as of the time of filing this report.

“The situation is being monitored, and further developments will be communicated in due course,” Abiodun said.

He assured residents that security agencies had launched investigations into the attack and were intensifying efforts to track down the perpetrators and secure the release of the abducted victims.
