This campaign, was, on its face value, a human right advocacy– so it was seen and many made to believe. But beneath this campaign of human right violation against Nigeria by senator Ted Cruz, lies the Biafra interest.
Ted Cruz, who is a prominent member of the Republican Party, is a senator of the U.S, from Texas and whose voice has been globally known as a defender of religious freedom.
Records show that the senator, since 2013, has sponsored several bills in the US legislature; these bills were tailored at checkmating countries where religious freedom is being suppressed.
The senator with Nigeria in his mind, has sponsored a bill: Nigeria Religious Freedom Sanctions Act aims to punish Nigeria’s authority and leaders found complicit to human right violation against Christians in Nigeria.

Ted Cruz centres his argument on records by international right groups such as the International Society for Civil Liberties and Rule of Law (Intersociety) which claims that the Nigerian christians face existential threat from Islamists and Fulani militias.

They highlighted how senator Ted Cruz in 2014 met the finance minister of the Biafra Republic Government in Exile, Ogechucku Nkere.The meeting of the Biafra delegates with senator Ted Cruz was publicized by Mazi Simon Ekpa who is currently serving a jail term in Finland following his conviction by Finnish court for terrorism related offence.
Hence, the Nigeria’s presidency insinuated that the meeting became the bases of Senator Ted Cruz resolve to work for the IPOB at the expense of the Nigeria’s future as an indivisible nation.
Prominently, Temitope Ajayi, a special assistant to president Bola Ahmed Tinubu, explicitly accused senator Ted Cruz of colluding with the IPOB separatist to destabilize Nigeria through the guise of religious freedom advocacy.

Even though the Nigeria’s government claim that senator Ted Cruz is IPOB lobbyist, the Nigeria’s presidency failed to provide a convincing evidence to substantiate their claims against senator Ted Cruz and the IPOB. Other than the photos from Ted Cruz and some leaders of the IPOB meeting, the Nigeria’s authority could not appropriately explain its claim about Senator Ted Cruz receiving bribe from IPOB secessionist to lobby prominent US politicians for them.
In his response, Ted Cruz’s office described the Nigeria’s government bribe allegation against him as “absurd”, emphasizing that the senator is unwaveringly committed to advocating for the rights of Christians globally to worship without intimidation or fear.
In the midst of this altercation, the reputation of senator Ted Cruz has grown exponentially among the Igbo tribes in Nigeria and among Nigerian christians across regions. His campaign against attack on christians in Nigeria, is vastly seen as prayer answered– divine intervention.
The IPOB leadership openly thanked Ted Cruz and president Trump for designating Nigeria as country of particular concern (CPC). The IPOB directorate emphasized that the Christian communities in Nigeria has been subjected to human right violation while successive Nigerian governments failed to protect the Nigerian christians.
The IPOB further noted that the growing human right violation against Christians in Nigeria is the basis for its secessionist agitation, explaining that the people of the defunct Biafra nation are predominantly christians and faces systemic marginalization in Nigeria.
As a matter of fact, religious freedom is paramount, and in context where these rights are not guaranteed, its amount to legitimate concern.

Many are concerned that US diplomatic sanctions on Nigeria will inadvertently, negatively impact Nigeria’s fight against insurgency. Hence, the two nations who have maintained a cordial relationship for years, have been advised to collaborate in fighting terrorism in Nigeria as Nigeria seek to balance civil rights and internal security.
The sovereignty of a nation becomes wobbly or endangered when its citizens face existential threat due to insecurity, or economic challenges or when the state has shown signs of incapacitation in protecting the lives of its citizens. As a result, sovereignty in the present day world politics, is not absolute as no nation in itself self-sufficient.
