Popular Nigerian singer dies after alleged food poisoning
The Bauchi entertainment industry is in mourning following the sudden and tragic death of popular Hausa traditional musician, John Zuya, widely known as John Mai Molo.
The singer, celebrated for his mastery of the molo, a traditional stringed instrument, reportedly died on Saturday morning, October 18, 2025, after allegedly consuming poisoned food in Tafawa Balewa Local Government Area of Bauchi State.
According to reports, close associates revealed that John had just returned from Lagos on October 16 after a series of successful performances at cultural events. Friends said he was in high spirits and excited about upcoming shows before tragedy struck.
Sources claim that the musician began feeling unwell shortly after eating a meal at his home. Moments later, he reportedly collapsed and was rushed to the Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University Teaching Hospital (ATBUTH) in Bauchi, where he was confirmed dead on arrival.
His colleague and friend, Emma Wakili, announced the heartbreaking news in a Facebook post, describing John as a “rare gem who lived for music and culture.”
