Rabies: Expert warns Nigerians against consuming dog meat from unverified sources

As the world marked World Rabies Day, Nigerians were cautioned against eating dog meat from unverified sources. Chukwunazom Cyra Obi, President of Good Development and Accountability Advocacy (GDAA), said rabies remains a “silent but deadly disease” in Nigeria.

He blamed low awareness, poor vaccination, and weak response systems for the spread. Obi urged government to vaccinate at least 70% of dogs yearly and run sensitization campaigns in local languages.

Obi also called for humane control of stray dogs through vaccination, spaying, and strict ownership laws, stressing that public vigilance and stronger veterinary services are vital to curb rabies.
