Tyla Rejects Tiwa Savage’s Apology Over “Coloured” Comment Controversy

Grammy-winning South African singer Tyla has distanced herself from Tiwa Savage’s apology to Black Americans regarding her use of the word “coloured.” Tyla, who has repeatedly identified with the term as it is culturally accepted in South Africa, clarified her stance during her performance at the Global Citizen Festival in New York.

While Savage apologized on Tyla’s behalf during a US interview, her remarks sparked outrage among South Africans, who argued she misrepresented their racial identity. Tyla subtly dismissed the apology by declaring “Sorry, I am not sorry” before performing her track Mr Media.

The move has earned Tyla widespread support back home, with many South Africans applauding her for standing firm in defending her identity and rejecting external narratives imposed on her culture.
