Atiku accuses Presidency of sponsoring propaganda, fake statements
The media office of former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has accused the Presidency of engaging in “high-level propaganda and disinformation” targeted at discrediting the opposition leader.
In a statement signed by Atiku’s Media Adviser, Paul Ibe, on Thursday, the camp of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) chieftain alleged that the Presidency has resorted to using faceless individuals to issue fabricated statements in Atiku’s name.
The statement singled out one “Kola Johnson,” described as a self-styled media consultant, who has been circulating press releases purporting to come from Atiku.
“Atiku Abubakar has never engaged one Kola Johnson as a media consultant, aide, or associate. Any statement issued in that name is fake and should be disregarded,” the release stated.
It further condemned what it called a “calculated propaganda project” aimed at portraying Atiku as promoting ethnic domination, warning Nigerians and the media to be vigilant against “the propaganda schemes of the Tinubu administration.”
According to the Atiku Media Office, only statements signed by Paul Ibe or the Special Assistant on Public Communications should be regarded as authentic. It also urged media organizations that published the alleged fake statements to issue retractions.
The development adds a new twist to the tense relationship between the Presidency and opposition figures, with both sides frequently trading accusations of misinformation and political sabotage.
