Hisbah Bans DJs, Restricts Women From Attending Male Gatherings

The Bauchi State Hisbah Command has announced new rules governing social gatherings, including weddings, birthdays, and cultural festivals, in a bid to curb what it described as rising social vices and threats to public peace.

In a statement dated July 16, 2025, and signed by the Permanent Commissioner, Barr. Aminu Balarabe Isah, the command outlined guidelines titled “Conduct of Marriage Ceremonies and Other Festivals in Bauchi State.”

According to the directive, men and women are prohibited from mixing at events, while female-organised activities are restricted to female participants only. DJs, gala nights, “Kauyawa Day,” and certain Fulani cultural displays such as Sharo, Shadi, and Garaya were also banned.

Other restrictions include:

Prohibition of dancing between opposite sexes, even in the presence of children.

Ban on the sale and consumption of intoxicants.

Prohibition of gambling, prostitution, and all forms of immoral acts in hotels, clubs, and recreational centres.

Gender-based seating arrangements at events.

Suspension of all activities during prayer times.

Mandatory observance of traditional dress codes.

Ban on blasphemous or abusive language.

Prohibition of pornographic films and birthdays “promoting immorality.”

The statement stressed that any violation would attract “appropriate action” from Hisbah.

When contacted, the Commander of Hisbah in Bauchi, Muhammad Muhammad Bununu, confirmed the directive, saying: “Yes, it is from us. We issued it.”
