NASS Moves To Create Special Salary Structure For Aides
The National Assembly is working on a new salary structure for legislative aides attached to the 469 federal lawmakers in both the Senate and House of Representatives.
Speaking during a three-day capacity-building training in Abuja, the Clerk to the National Assembly, Kamoru Ogunlana, explained that the reform seeks to improve service delivery and enhance lawmakers’ performance. He noted that although aides are political appointees, their current conditions of service follow civil service templates that fail to reflect the peculiarities of their roles.
Ogunlana stressed the need for a distinct framework that considers the temporary nature of aides’ jobs, the lack of job security, and the absence of a comprehensive law defining their duties. He added that the National Assembly Service Commission and the Revenue Mobilisation Allocation and Fiscal Commission should develop a special salary structure and conditions of service to attract competent personnel and prevent arbitrary termination.
The Chairman of the National Assembly Service Commission, Saviour Enyiekere, also urged aides to continually upgrade their skills to contribute meaningfully to legislative processes.
