Hon. Davidson Kolawole Akinlayo, the distinguished member representing Ekiti North Federal Constituency II in the House of Representatives, has reaffirmed his commitment to people-oriented governance, describing the 10th National Assembly as a “people-centered” legislature.
In an exclusive interview, Hon. Akinlayo praised the Assembly’s early achievements during its first recess, emphasizing that the legislature has remained focused on the needs and interests of ordinary Nigerians.
> “It’s been a good House truly a people-oriented one. Every activity is centered around the people, and we have made it a point to put their interests first,” he said.
Landmark Road Project Delivered After 24 Years
One of Hon. Akinlayo’s major constituency interventions is the completion of a long-abandoned inter-state road connecting Otun in Ekiti State to Ora in Osun State. The road, neglected for over two decades, was a key campaign promise.
> “That road had been abandoned for 24 years. I made a commitment to my people that I would get it done. With the support of the Federal Ministry of Works, it was re-awarded under an emergency intervention, and today, it is a fully tarred expressway,” he proudly stated.
According to the lawmaker, the project is now a symbol of renewed government presence and accessibility for rural communities that had been cut off from economic opportunities.
Federal Employment Opportunities for Ekiti Graduates
Hon. Akinlayo also disclosed the successful facilitation of federal employment for 25 graduates from his constituency. Beneficiaries were placed in key institutions such as the Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS) and the Centre for Management Development (CMD).
> “In the next two or three days, we’re expecting even more appointment letters. Employment remains a top concern for my people. Once they’re employed, 60% of their burdens are lifted,” he said.
Redefining Empowerment Through Skill Acquisition
Responding to criticisms of the traditional “handout” model of constituency empowerment, Hon. Akinlayo revealed a strategic shift toward skills-based empowerment.
> “What many people call empowerment is not real. Items shared are often resold by the beneficiaries. We want to train people in tailoring, plumbing, mechanics, and other trades, give them certificates, and then empower them with tools. That way, it becomes a sustainable livelihood,” he explained.
Maintaining Accessibility and Digital Engagement
Contrary to claims of inaccessibility, the lawmaker emphasized his long-standing commitment to staying in touch with constituents.
> “I’ve used the same phone number since MTN came to Nigeria. Everyone knows it. Even if I become a governor tomorrow, I’ll still be accessible.”
Hon. Akinlayo also credited his media team and active use of social media for helping him maintain transparency and consistent updates about his projects and programs.
> “Ekiti is highly literate—95% of my people are educated and digitally savvy. They follow what I do, even from their farms. We use our platforms to inform, engage, and get feedback.”
A Vision for Continued Service
With the National Assembly now in recess, Hon. Akinlayo views it not as a break, but as an opportunity for deeper engagement with the grassroots.
> “This is another period of engagement. My work in the House continues, and we are fully committed to doing even more for our people.”
As he pushes for inclusive growth, skill development, and meaningful employment, Hon. Akinlayo is redefining political representation by placing long-term community empowerment at the heart of his agenda.
