Tragedy struck in South Africa over the weekend as Asher Watkins, a well-known Texas real estate millionaire and avid trophy hunter, was killed during a hunting expedition. The 48-year-old businessman was reportedly fatally gored by a Cape buffalo, one of Africa’s most dangerous wild animals.

Watkins, who built his fortune through high-end real estate developments across Texas, was also recognized in international hunting circles for his passion for big game hunting. His social media accounts showcased numerous photos of past expeditions, including hunts across Africa, Asia, and North America. Friends and followers knew him as someone who combined his adventurous lifestyle with philanthropy, often donating to wildlife conservation groups—ironically, many of which promote controlled hunting as a method of population management.

The fatal encounter occurred in Limpopo Province, a region in northern South Africa known for its game reserves and guided hunting tours. According to local sources, Watkins was part of a licensed hunting group led by experienced trackers. The group had been tracking a mature Cape buffalo when the animal, believed to have been wounded, suddenly turned aggressive. Despite efforts to contain the situation, the buffalo charged Watkins at close range, fatally injuring him before guides could intervene.

Cape buffalos are often referred to as “black death” due to their unpredictable nature and aggressive defense when threatened. Weighing over 1,500 pounds and capable of delivering lethal blows with their massive horns, they are considered one of the most dangerous
